Classical music has evolved through centuries of tradition, refinement and innovation into what many consider the most rarefied form of musical expression. It is certainly the most enduring.

There is great dynamic range, from soft to loud, in classical music, and it is the soft passages that present a special challenge. Some of the best photographic opportunities occur during these intense and quiet moments. Camera noise, or any kind of noise, is not welcome or tolerated, so I have had to learn to get my shots silently.

When the going gets frenetic, the musicians get going, and then I don't have to worry about noise, just getting the action and catching movement at the perfect moment. I also love to get the interaction betweeen players in, say, a string quartet. Often, it's just a brief glance between them before they return to their own reveries.

It is a waiting game, but well worth the wait.
